2017-18 Season – Open for enrolments!

Roll up Roll up! The 2017/18 season of Music Centre is now open for enrolment!

As usual, there are some changes planned for next season, please take a minute to read the following information carefully:

Who can enrol?

All students between 8 and 21 can enrol in Music Centre. You don’t need to be having lessons in school, or have reached any grades. For over 18s (or parents of students) we also offer an adult choir (Medina Voices) for only £2 a session!

How much does it cost?

Subscription fees have remained unchanged this year. An annual fee of £60 covers each student for as many groups as they wish to join. New members can also have a 3 week free-trial!

New Groups:

We’re delighted to announce the creation of the following new groups:

  • StringAlong – Aimed at complete beginner string players. Only had one lesson? Not a problem! Bring your violin / viola / cello / double bass along and join in with this fun and relaxed workshop. 
  • C Breeze – Aimed at complete beginner wind, brass and percussion players. Only managed to buzz a raspberry down your trumpet? Great! Come along and join in with this beginner session and see how quickly your technique can develop.
  • Keyboard Club – back due to popular demand! This group caters for keyboard and piano players from beginners to advanced abilities. You’ll need to bring your own keyboard but all music is supplied. (rehearsal times are currently still TBC)
  • Ukulele Group – You asked – we delivered. We’re excited to provide this new ukulele group open to all ranges and abilities. Note: This takes place on a Friday evening at Nine Acres Primary school. You’ll still need to enrol through the Music Centre.
  • Brass Buttons – Few things in life are as soothing as listening to a well oiled brass band. This group offers beginners and new starters the ability to play in a small, dedicated brass workshop without any of those noisy clarinets or flutes to get in the way! Suitable for complete beginners up to grade 1.

Changes to existing groups:

We’ve decided to give Music Centre a fresh look for this season and update our group names. A complete list of groups is available here, but the following is a summary of changes to help you determine the name of your old group:

Bands on the Buses – Sunday 25th June

Hi Youth Band & Centre Wind Band members and parents

We hope you had a good half term and that those of you taking exams are surviving! At least there’s not too long to go now…….

We’re really sorry that the trip to Birmingham has had to be cancelled, but at least we know that we were judged good enough to be invited. It would be good to end the year on a high with our performance at the Bus Museum on Sunday 25th June and we hope that you’ll all be able to come and play. All your family and friends are invited to come along and support us – parking and entry to the museum are free – and if any of them play instruments please get them to bring them along and join in. The more the merrier! We’ll be playing well-known numbers including Queen in Concert, Grease, The Lion King, Dancing Queen, Rock n Roll Hall of Fame etc….. so it should be fun.

Please arrive at 2pm ready to play from 2.30-3.30. Concert dress will be the usual white shirt/blouse and black trousers/skirt. If it’s fine we’ll play outside so you might want to bring shades, sun cream and a hat. If wet there’s plenty of room to play indoors. Don’t forget to bring stands please.

There’ll be rehearsals on Saturdays 17th and 24th June at the normal Music Centre time of 10.00-12.30. If you’re not able to make the 17th June but will be playing at the Bus Museum please could you so that we have an idea of number of chairs needed and possible gaps in the line-up?

Youth for Music – 6th July

To all parents and carers,

Thank you to those of you who have let us know if your child will be coming on the Birmingham trip and sent in all the paperwork.

Alas, to date we have received responses from less than a quarter of parents. It is essential that we know by Friday 26 May if your child will be coming or not. Obviously if we do not receive enough replies then we will have to cancel the trip which would be a huge shame after all the children’s hard work. I also know many children are very excited about going up to Birmingham to perform.

Please can I ask parents/carers to email me at as a matter of urgency by 4pm on Friday 26 May. The remaining paperwork doesn’t need to be with me until Monday 5 June.

Open Day – This Saturday! (29th)


This is a day where we open the doors of Music Centre and welcome in all students of any age and experience who want to see what we do at Music Centre. Whether you’re just starting out on the clarinet, a budding violinist, or an experienced trumpeter – we have something to offer you!

Play Along Session 10:00 to 11:00

This year we have a special free-of-charge Play Along session open to everyone. This is with our Foundation Wind Band and will take place between 10:00 and 11:00. All you need to bring is your instrument and a music stand (if you have one!). All music will be provided.

Win a Ukulele!!

This year we are delighted to announce a Grand Prize Draw for a chance to win an Ashbury Soprano Ukulele worth £86! Tickets for this draw are only £2 and can be purchased during the Open Day and at either of our two up-coming concerts on the 13th May. A big thank you to Hobgoblin Music for donating this wonderful prize.

Prize to be drawn at our evening concert on 13th May at Medina Theatre.

Specialist Music Shops on site!

We have a number of specialist music retailers coming on to site for the morning:

These shops will be on site selling woodwind, brass, percussion, traditional and stringed instruments. In addition to accessories, sheet music and gifts.

Instrument repair services are also available. This is a unique opportunity to view a wide range of musical produce all in one place!

Raffles, Cakes & Refreshments

There will be the usual supply of home-made cakes, pastries and sandwiches available all morning. Additionally the Friends’ Association will be holding a raffle with a number of fantastic prizes.



We have a number of new items on sale this year, including Music Centre satchels (£10) and Music Bags (£7.50). These are high quality bags printed with the Music Centre logo and are great for carrying around sheet music, recorders, notes etc. All money raised also goes straight back to the Friends’ Association!

Hub Partners

There will also be a number of IW Music Hub partners on site to offer advice on what other areas of Music expertise are available on the island.

March Newsletter

This newsletter provides some updates on events at Music Centre this year and some more dates for your diary.

Mazama Entry: The performance of ‘Mazama’ for our entry into this year’s Youth For Music competition went really well and all the staff are incredibly proud of the standard all the students achieved! The recording is now available to view on YouTube – please make sure your child gets to see the video if they haven’t done so already. We will let you know as soon as we hear if we’ve been successful in reaching the next round.

18th March – Jazz Course: The next Jazz Workshop will be taking place next Saturday (18th) 13:00 to 15:00. This is free to attend and is led by Dan Mar-Molinero. All students of approximately grade 4 standard and above (on any instrument) are welcome to attend.

25th March – Easter Course Part 1: The Youth Wind Band and Youth Orchestra students will be travelling to Taunton College on Saturday 25th March to join forces with groups from the Southampton Music Service to work towards their joint Easter Course and concert. Students who are not participating in the course are still welcome to attend Music Centre as normal on the 25th and can provide some musical assistance to the junior groups instead.

Friday 7th April to Sunday 9th April – Easter Course Part 2: For the second part of the Easter course students from Southampton will be coming to the island for the weekend to rehearse with the Youth Orchestra and Youth Wind Band at the UKSA in Cowes. Full details have been emailed out to all students who enrolledf for the course. If you require any additional information please speak to me at any Saturday morning session.

Sunday 9th April – 18:30 – Easter Concert: The end-of-course Easter concert featuring the combined forces of the IW Youth Orchestra, IW Youth Wind Band, Southampton Wind Band and Southampton Youth Orchestra. Taking place at Medina Theatre. Tickets £8 / £4 / £20. A concert not to be missed!

April 29th – Open Day:This year we are moving our annual Open Day from November to April. This is intended to be a bigger event than in previous years, and we are encouraging all non-members to come along and join in with the junior groups. More details to follow shortly.

Youth Wind Band students will be joining the afternoon concert to perform Mazama with the joint wind bands. They will also be perfroming their own repertoire in the evening concert.

If you would like your child to remain on site between the morning and afternoon, or afternoon and evening sessions please could you as soon as possible so that we can ensure we have the right level of staff on hand to supervise.

The Beginner and Junior strings will be performing their own end-of-season concert at an external venue – to be confirmed.

Open Day – Saturday 29th April

This year we are moving our annual Open Day to Saturday 29th April. We’ll have a number of specialist music retailers on site, along with local Music Hub partners, refreshments and raffles.

We will also be inviting any new students to come and join us in a special ‘play-along’ session 10-11am – ALL FREE!

Please help spread the word to as many people as possible!

Mazama Update – Recording this Saturday!

Youth, Music Centre and Foundation Wind Band Parents,

Please can everyone aim to arrive by 9.30 this Saturday,

The preparations for our National Festival of Music for Youth entry ‘Mazama’ are going well, and we are on target to record this coming Saturday (11th Feb).

Dress for the morning is all black (or as dark as possible) for band players, black bottoms and a brightly coloured top for bell stick players. Casual clothes are fine!

We will video our performance after break, and will be finished by 12.30 as normal. I’m sure a number of you will then be staying on for the Jazz Workshop at 1.00 and will want to bring a packed lunch. If you haven’t heard about the Jazz Workshops, they are open to any player of Grade 4 and above and sound a fantastic opportunity. 

For the recording bell stick players can choose to have their faces painted too, any volunteer helpers would be much appreciated!

Once our video recording is complete it will be submitted to Music for Youth, probably via YouTube so you’ll all be able to see it! It will be the end of April before we hear if we have been invited to progress to the finals, held in Birmingham between 4th and 8th July. We’ll let you know as soon as we can.

New!! Jazz Workshops

Dan Mar-Molinero

We are delighted to inform you of two upcoming Jazz Workshops which are open for all musicians, whatever instrument they play, who are grade 4 standard and above. These sessions will be led by Dan Mar-Molinero, a saxophonist, composer and educator who has been recognised nationally for his work in jazz and commercial music both as an educator and practitioner. Alongside composing and performing, Dan lectures in Jazz and Popular music at Southampton University.

The workshops will take place on:

Saturday 11 February 13.00 – 15.00 at Medina College
Saturday 18 March 13.00 – 15.00 at Medina College

The workshops will explore and teach fundamental jazz skills and repertoire through practical sessions. Topics covered will include Time and Feel, Jazz Harmony, Jazz Language through Improvisation, Jazz Chords and Building a Solo. Musicians taking part will gain a better understanding of performing jazz and improvising. The workshops aim to demystify some of the complexity surrounding jazz conventions and to explain in simple terms how to make the most of improvising and playing the music.

New – Percussion Group!

We are looking forward to welcoming all our students back on Saturday after the Christmas holidays – I’m sure they all managed to keep up with their daily practice schedules!

This year we’re very pleased to announce the introduction of a new Percussion Group at Music Centre. The group will focus on percussion workshops and ensemble pieces and aims to provide specialist tuition and experience for a wide range of percussion instruments. The group will run alternate weeks in term time, 12:30 to 13:30. This is open to all percussionists / drum players of any grade and will be directed by Clive Malabar. There is no extra charge for this group. 

Initial rehearsal dates for the year are as follows:

January 21st
February 4th
March 4th

Future dates to be confirmed. Feel free to turn up on the 21st January, or else speak to myself or if you need any additional information.

Friends Association AGM – Sat 3rd Dec

The Music Centre Friends’ Association will be holding their Annual General Meeting on the 3rd December, 12:30 at Medina College, Fairlee Road, Newport.

You are invited and encouraged to attend in order to hear the latest updates on the Music Centre.
The meeting is expected to last for approximately 30 minutes. If you have any questions or matters you would like to raise in the meeting you can email us in advance at .

Important Update: December rehearsals and Concerts

There are a number of changes to the timings of rehearsals on both the 3rd and 10th of December. This is to maximise the rehearsal times for all groups in the theatre prior to their Christmas concerts.

Please read the following information carefully.

Saturday 3 December

The following groups will rehearse as normal at Medina College in the morning:
Music Centre String Orchestra
IOW Youth Orchestra
Music Centre Foundation Band
Music Centre Wind Band
IOW Youth Wind Band
There will be NO theory session

Other groups will rehearse as follows at Medina Theatre in preparation for the evenings performance:

3.30 – 4.00 IOW Youth Choir
4.00 – 4.30 IOW Adult Choir
4.30 – 5.15 Stage Band
5:00 – 6.40 Beginner and Junior string groups (5:00 – 6:00 Leisure Centre, 6:00 – 6:40 Theatre)
5.15 – 6.00 Recorder groups
7.00 Concert

The concert for these groups will then begin at 7.00 at Medina Theatre. Please can we ask string and recorders players to bring a packed tea and a drink to have between the rehearsal and concert. This will be the last session this term for both choirs, recorders and beginner and junior string players.

Saturday 10 December

There will be NO Saturday morning rehearsals at Medina College for any groups. There will be NO theory session

Rehearsals for groups playing in the second concert will be as follows at Medina Theatre:
2.00 – 2.40 Music Centre Wind Band
2.40 – 3.10 Music Centre Wind Band and IOW Youth Wind Band joint rehearsal
3.10 – 3.45 IOW Youth Wind Band
2.30 – 3.30 IOW Youth Orchestra (Conference Room at Medina Theatre)
3.50 – 4.10 IOW Youth Orchestra, Percussion – Toy Symphony rehearsal
4.10 – 5.00 IOW Youth Orchestra and wind players from IOW Youth Wind Band, Music Centre String Orchestra for full orchestral items

The concert for these groups will then begin at 7.00 at Medina Theatre. Please can MC String Orchestra players bring along a packed tea and drink for between the rehearsal and concert. Please can we suggest Foundation Wind Band players have their tea before the concert.

Unless we have suggested your child brings a packed tea or is involved with the last rehearsal session on both days we will assume your child will be collected and taken home between the rehearsal and concert. If you would prefer your child to remain at the theatre please can you let Matt know so you child can be supervised. Alternatively, if you are happy for your child to go into Newport between the rehearsal and concert can you again please let Matt know. All musicians should be back at the theatre no later than 6.40.

Concert Dress for both performances:

Girls: White blouse, black skirt or trousers, black shoes
Boys: White shirt, black trousers, black shoes


10 December will be the last session of the term for groups taking part in this second concert.


Tickets may be purchased in advance from Medina Theatre ( / 823884) or on the night. The cost of tickets is:
£8 adults
£4 students
£20 family ticket, 2 adults and 2 children

Rehearsals for all groups begin again on Saturday 7 January at their usual times.

Open Day – this Saturday!

This Saturday (12th November) is our annual Open Day. This is an opportunity to bring along friends and family to see what happens at Music Centre, visitors can also join in with the groups. A number of local music shops will be attending with merchandise, instruments and accessories. This year we are pleased to welcome the return of Becketts Music from Southampton.

There will also be a raffle and home made cakes, sandwiches and snacks on offer from the Friends’ Association. The event also aims to raise funds and awareness for the Music Centre – so please bring as many friends, families and colleagues as you can!

The morning starts from 9:00 with the Youth Choir and runs through until 1:30pm.

2016/17 Updates and Changes

There are a number of changes taking place at Music Centre next year. Please take a few minutes to read a summary below to avoid any surprises in September.


Changes to Session Times:

  • Theory Group will now take place 12:30 to 13:30 each week
  • Senior Recorder Group will now take place 09:30 to 10:00 each week
  • Junior Recorder Group will now take place 10:00 to 11:00 each morning

Changes to Teachers:

  • We are pleased to welcome Tess Kullander who will be assisting Christine Axford with the Foundation Wind Band.
  • We are pleased to welcome Ruth Allen who will be taking over from Ginny Kelly as conductor of the Music Centre Wind Band.
  • Music Centre String Orchestra will now be led by Maggie Courtney.
  • Matt Courtney takes on the role of Music Centre Manager and will be available every session in and around the canteen area. If you have any questions or concerns regarding Music Centre Matt will be happy to assist.

Updates to Groups:

  • Music Centre String Orchestra will be invited to join the IW Youth Orchestra for the first half of each rehearsal session. Parts will be specially arranged to be appropriate for their level of skill. They will return to their own rehearsal session after break. Please note that Youth Orchestra repertoire level and other YO rehearsal arrangements are unchanged.
  • Youth Choir is no longer offered free of charge. Students must complete an enrolment form and pay the annual fee to participate in this group.
  • From time to time students may be moved/shared between the senior groups at the discretion of the conductors and this will always be discussed with students beforehand. This helps us balance the groups and ensure we’re able to maintain standards in all ensembles.

General Updates:

  • Enrolment fees remain unchanged at £60, however we are no longer able to accept part-payment. Full payment must be sent to the IW Music Hub (as detailed on the Enrolment Form) at the beginning of the academic year. Please do not bring cheques or cash with you on a Saturday morning as we are no longer able to accept payment at Medina. Students joining part-way through the year may be eligible for reduced rates at the discretion of the Music Centre Manager. Families on limited income may continue to ask the Friends’ Association for financial assistance with fees – please contact the Chairman of the Friends’ Association.
  • You can now join the Friends’ Association for £1 online. Payment is accepted by PayPal and you’ll receive copies of all our committee meeting minutes as well as invitations to our AGM. Please see our website for details. Joining the Friends’ Association helps us to engage with parents and students and to identify areas for improvement at Music Centre each year.
  • The IW Music Centre is now managed and funded by the IW Music Hub in conjunction with the Southampton Music Hub. The Hubs receive funding directly from the Arts Council and are actively involved in all aspects of music education throughout Southampton and the Isle of Wight.

Upcoming Events:

  • The IW Youth Symphony Orchestra and IW Youth Wind Band will be participating in a joint rehearsal course and concert with the Southampton Youth Orchestra and Youth Wind Band at the beginning of the 2017 Easter Holidays. Keep an eye on the website for details.
  • There will be two Christmas concerts – scheduled for the 3rd and 10th of December at Medina Theatre. Please keep an eye on the website for full details.

The IW County Press recently ran a great piece on our last concert, featuring Alana Spence and Ginny Kelly with the Music Centre Wind Band. In case you missed it – here’s an extract! 

“Ginny Kelly, conductor of the Music Centre Wind Band, announced this would be the final concert for her former pupil, Alana Spence, who was so inspired by her time at the Music Centre she studied music at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff, before coming back to assist with both the Music Centre Wind Band and the IW Youth Concert Band.

Presenting Alana with flowers, Ginny said: “I taught her clarinet and saxophone for ten years and now she’s off to London to work as a musician. I’m so proud of her.”

To the assembled children and parents at Medina Theatre, she said: “This could be you in ten or 12 ye ars’ time — working in one of the big London orchestras.”

Judging by the overall professionalism and musical standard of the performers, this was clearly not a pipedream on Ginny’s part.

It was certainly an excellent last hurrah for Alana Spence as she heads for experience in London orchestras.

2016/17 Season Update

We’re sure you’ll be excited to hear that plans for the 2016/17 Season of Music Centre are well under way. Some of you may have already received your new enrolment forms through the post!

IWMH LogoWork has been progressing over the last few months to move the management of Music Centre fully into the IW Music Hub. The IW Music Hub is working in partnership with the Southampton Music Hub, and will be responsible for all aspects of the IW Music Centre (with help from the Friends’ Association).

You will see some minor changes when you join  us in September so it’s always worthwhile checking the website for timetable or venue changes which may affect your ensemble.  A list of changes will be announced shortly.

A provisional calendar of rehearsal and concert dates is now available, this will be updated over the next few weeks. The start date for next season is planned to be Saturday 17th September. Enrolment forms will be available to download shortly from our website.

Finally, I would like to thank Ginny Kelly for her incredible contributions to Music Centre over the past years. She has been an amazing inspiration to her students and colleagues , a key part of the Music Centre, and one of our longest serving members of staff. Students, colleagues and Friends’ will all be sad to see you go! We also wave goodbye to Alana Spence, who is off to London on the next step of her musical career – good luck for the future and thank you for your support at Music Centre.

Wind Band Concert – Tonight! (Sat 30th Jan)


Don’t forget – The Music Centre Wind Band’s January concert is tonight – 7pm at All Saints Church, Gurnard.

Programme includes Music from The Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, The Phantom of the Opera, The Lord of the Dance, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin and How to Train your Dragon.

The students will be playing solos and duets between each band item.

£4 adults, children free.

All profit to Gurnard Church and to help us buy new music which is very expensive.

New – Adult Choir!

We are pleased to announce the return of the Adult Choir at the IW Music Centre. If you’ve always wanted to sing in a choir now is your chance. Island singing teacher, Heather Bentley, will lead the choir through a wide and varied choral repertoire, every Saturday morning Music Centre session from 11:30 to 12:30 at Medina College.

2015-16 Season

P1190516It’s nearly here! The 2015-16 Season of Music Centre kicks off this Saturday, 19th September.

New enrolment forms are now available to download from our website.

Please note a short summary of changes for this season below:

  • We are unfortunately unable to offer Keyboards or Adult Choir classes this year.
  • Costs for this season will be £60 for a full year’s tuition, and £30 for half a year.

The Music Centre is now managed and run by the IW Music Hub. The IW Music Centre Friends’ Association will continue to collect fees and provide support to the IW Music Hub. We hope to keep disruption to students and parents to a minimum – but please bare with us whilst we work through this transition period.

A room map and brochure will be available shortly – but please arrive as normal at Medina College, staff will be on hand to direct you to your group and to process your enrolment forms.

IW Festival Ticket Draw – £917.13 Raised!

Thank-youThe results are in, we’ve added up all our Grand Draw ticket sales and are delighted to announce that you have raised a staggering £917.13*. This is an amazing amount of money and will help us to continue to support the IW Music Centre through a challenging transition year.

Thank you to everyone who took part, whether you bought tickets, sold tickets, or promoted the competition. A massive thank you to John Giddings and SOLO for the generous donation of the Festival Tickets.

We look forward to welcoming back students, parents and visitors when Music Centre returns in September.

Thank you so much to all of you who took part in our Grand Draw for the chance to win 2 IW Festival Camping tickets.

All the online and paper tickets were sorted this morning, and the draw took place at 1.30pm at the IW Music Service office. The winning ticket was drawn by Lorraine Bashford.

We are delighted to announce that the winning ticket was No. 325 – won by Yvonne McCamley.

We had an incredible number of entries in just one week, and are overwhelmed by the support and generosity both from the IW Festival organisers, and from all of you who bought tickets. We will publish the total amount raised shortly.

Great start to 2015 & Changes to Groups

After welcoming back our students after the Christmas break for the 2015 season we can look forward to a number of upcoming concerts and events over the next few months.

Unfortunately, due to lack of demand, we have had to make the difficult decision to close the Guitar Group. We apologise for any inconvenience, but should we get enough interest in this group in the future we will do our best to get it running again.
